In Tierra del Vino the harvesting of the vineyard and the making of high quality wine has always been fundamental for the rural economies of the zone. There are quotes from the medieval times which spoke about the goodness of the wine from this region which is the one and only known as Tierra del vino. Until late 20th century, the vineyard was the one and only harvest of the zone, but, even though the effect of phylloxera in this region was not very remarkable, it was recently when certain factors contributed to an important vineyard torn-out in this region.
In 1997, a series of wine growers and makers of this zone determined to terminate with the tendency of vineyard torn-out, took the first steps into the pursue of a Protected Designation of Origin.
After more than six years working on the qualification and certification of the wine (first qualified as “Vino de la Tierra” and then as “Vino de Calidad con Indicación geográfica”), on April 27th 2007 the order AYG/782/2007 from April 24th was published in the official bulleting of Castilla y León num.81, by means of which the v.c.p.r.d. protected designation of origin “Tierra del vino de Zamora” was recognized, and our regulation approved. “Tierra del Vino” has held a protected designation of origin since 24th April 2007, when Order AYG/782/2007, dated on 24th April, came into effect.
